Who needs IRP
- Vehicles that travel in two or more member jurisdictions and have two axles with a gross or registered weight over 26,000 lbs
- Vehicles with three or more axles, regardless of weight
- Combinations with a combined weight over 26,000 lbs
How it works
You apply in your base jurisdiction, usually the state where you have an established place of business and keep your records. You report the miles each vehicle traveled in each jurisdiction, and the base state collects the fees and distributes them. Renewals are annual.
Each state runs its own IRP office and online portal, typically through the DMV or department of revenue, so check your base state's IRP site for forms and deadlines.
