Do you need a USDOT number?
- You operate in interstate commerce with a vehicle over 10,001 lbs gross weight or combination weight
- You transport 9+ passengers for compensation or 16+ passengers not for compensation
- You haul hazardous materials in quantities that require placards
- Many states also require a USDOT number for intrastate commercial vehicles
Steps to get your DOT number and authority
- Apply through FMCSA's registration system. The USDOT number itself is free. FMCSA is moving registration to its new Motus system, so check fmcsa.dot.gov for the current portal.
- If you haul regulated freight for hire across state lines, apply for MC operating authority (FMCSA charges a fee per authority type).
- Have your insurer file proof of liability insurance with FMCSA.
- File a BOC-3 through a process agent.
- Register for UCR, and set up IRP plates and IFTA if you run interstate.
- Set up drug and alcohol testing, driver qualification files and a maintenance program before your first load.
The new entrant safety audit
New carriers enter an 18-month monitoring period and get a safety audit, usually within the first 12 months. Auditors check driver files, hours of service, drug and alcohol testing, vehicle maintenance and insurance. Some violations are an automatic fail, such as using a driver without a valid CDL or medical certificate, or having no drug and alcohol testing program.
