# What is Out-of-service order?

An order that stops a driver, vehicle or carrier from operating until a problem is fixed.

Roadside inspectors can place a driver or vehicle out of service for serious violations, such as brake defects or hours-of-service violations. FMCSA can also place an entire carrier out of service.

A carrier's out-of-service rate compares the share of its inspections with an out-of-service violation against the national average.
