# What is Operating authority?

FMCSA permission to transport regulated freight or passengers for hire across state lines.

Operating authority, identified by an MC number, is required for for-hire interstate carriers of regulated commodities, brokers and freight forwarders.

To stay active, carriers must keep required insurance and a BOC-3 on file with FMCSA.
